Hannah is a freelance illustrator artist, as well as an educator at museums, galleries, arts charities and organisations. Her teaching practice is very much an extension of her artistic practice, it is simply sharing with others what she knows and does, and this gives her great pleasure.

In her ‘Drawing as Storytelling’ workshop she will guide you through a mixture of drawing techniques and collage materials to create wonderful characters – animals, insects, humans – or whatever your imagination comes up with!

Well join us for our “Cracked Pot Comedy Club” at The Step Above, an evening of Myddleton Road mirth in the heart of Bowes Park in our room above! Hosted by MC Chris Marco K, who hails from Palmers Green.

Cracked Pot Comedy features the best of rising talent from the London Comedy circuit and promises to be a night of riotous fun. It’s a regular event at The Step on the first Saturday of every month!

Cracked Pot Comedy Club

The night features Jonny Drop, a DJ, producer, multi-instrumentalist and vinyl junkie. Jonny has been holding DJ residencies across London for the past 5 years, and his unique ear & epic record collection means that we’re in for a treat! He seamlessly blends Funk, Soul, Jazz, Rhythm’n’Blues, through to Nu-Disco, Trip-hop and Deep House in his varied sets.

He has toured Europe and the UK as a DJ and drummer in numerous bands, and is currently writing and producing his first LP. His tunes draw upon influences from many corners of the musical spectrum, inspired by diverse artists like DJ shadow, Nighmares On Wax, Quantic, Eddie Bo and Miles Davis.

Step Soul Sessions

£2 per person and there is money to be won. That’s right, real money. Maximum of six people per team. Turn up on the night or book a table, it’s up to you.

The rounds are quick fire, so get ready for short bursts of concentration… we’ve heard that Meantime London Lager can improve your brain power* so there will be plenty of time between questions for imbibing.

*Not supported by scientific evidence but maybe the winning team will prove the theory.

It’s an open mic night hosted one week by Tony Bowen, otherwise known as Tony Tuesday, the folk hero of Xfm and the other week by a special guest!

We throw open our doors and the floor to musicians from far and wide to hone their musical skills. It’s fresh, raw and some might need a little more practice but it’s sure to be a fun night out.

Every other Tuesday at 8pm.

The next talk will be on London’s New River which celebrates its 400th birthday this September.

This incredible four hundred year old artificial waterway was designed to bring fresh water from Hertfordshire into London and is still doing so today. Originally nearly forty miles long the New River’s path meandered from Chadwell (via Bowes Park!) to The New River Head near Sadler’s Wells.

The illustrated talk will last an hour including an opportunity to ask questions and to look at some rare books.

You can also enjoy a drink, meal or snack before, during or after the talk – there will be an interval and we’ll be offering a special Discover London deal or any main meal and a glass of wine for £11!

The price for each talk is £7 or £5 for concessions.

Hannah Carding always wanted to be a mermaid, but seeing that this would be impossible, has settled for drawing stories and teaching.

Hannah creates her pictures using many different techniques from simple line drawings to etchings, monoprints and paintings, or creating embroideries and storybooks.

She grew up in the heart of Dorset and is very much a lover of rural places – swimming in them, cycling through them or just meandering. In fact, moving through places is often when ideas and imaginings for works of art come to mind.

Hannah’s work often depicts creatures, great or small, or little characters that are part of a narrative that can be a fusion of funny or sad, serious or frivolous. She tries to create worlds that are familiar by the emotions they convey, but with a quiet sense of the unusual about them.

Hannah currently lives and works in London as a freelance illustrator artist and as an educator for various arts organisations. Sharing with others what she knows and does gives her great pleasure.
